Reproductive Technology Flashcards
Cervical insemination
Semen is deposited into the uterus through the vagina
Laparoscopic insemination
-semen is surgically inserted directly into the oviduct
Two ways to collect semen from a buck
-artificial vagina
-electroejaculator
What temp is semen stored in the nitrogen tank
-196°C
What are semen straws labeled with
-name and ID # of the sire
-registration #
-date of semen collection
Estrus synchronization timeline
- 10-14 days prior: flushing
- day 0: teasing
- day 3: lutalyse (prostaglandin injections to lyse any existing corpus luteums
-day 8: CIDRs: to gradually release progesterone - day 13: removal and CIDR and inject lutalyse once more
What is a lutalyse injection
-2mL that contains synthetic prostaglandin to lyse any pre existing corpus luteum
-used off labeled
What is a CIDR
-gradually release progesterone which is absorbed in the mucous membranes of vagina
-helps the body for conception and maintain pregnancy
-removal of CIDR is followed by a second lutalyse injection —-> estrogen levels increase, starts ovulation
-does come into heat 50-55 hrs after
What must happen 8 hours after CIDR comes out?
8 hours after the CIDR comes out,
-heat checks every 4 hours
-AI scheduled 12 hours after heat behaviors detected
First step to AI
-restrain doe so rump is elevated
-clean vulva with iodine and water (clean hand dirty hand)
-dry the vulva
Second step to AI
-lift canister from storage tank using forceps
-quickly retrieve with tweezers
- thaw in 35°C warm water for 30 seconds
- dry semen and insert into AI gun
Third step to AI
-apply line to speculum and insert upwards into vulva
-attach a light source to end of speculum
-visualize cervix
Fourth step to AI
-pass AI gun through the speculum and into the cervix
-depress plunger and eject sperm
-optional: inject GNRH to improve chances of conception
