Reproductive Techniques Flashcards
what is In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
an embryo is created in the lab from sperm and eggs from parents with desirable traits. embryo is then implanted into either the mother or an unrelated female.
what is an embryo-transfer
superovulation is used to increase the number of ova, who is then inseminated repeatedly over a few days. the donor’s uterus is then flushed and the best eggs are transferred to the recipients uterus.
what is sperm sexing
spermatozoa carrying genes can be separated and used with IVF to influence proportions of male and female offspring produced. this is important for milk production - female cows - and meat production - male cows -
what is artificial insemination (AI)
sperm collected from a male with desirable traits is used to manually inseminate the female. this enables a male with desirable characteristics to produce many offspring.
