what is a neonate
A
a new-born that is at the stage of not surviving without its mother or intensive care

what are some characteristics of neonates
A
- unable to stand
- minimal fat reserves
- underdeveloped immune system
- eyes and ears closed
- cannot regulate body temperature

what causes fading syndrome
A
due to poor thermoregulation, fluid and energy balance, low immunity and poor mothering

what is neonatal septicaemia
A
the vulnerability of neonates put it at risk of colonisation by bacteria which may result in rapid death

what is a congenital abnormality
A
an abnormality the animal is born with such as a cleft palate. this will affect suckling and aspiration of milk

A
a genetic disease such as down syndrome
