Gene Therapy - Transgenetics And Pharming Flashcards
1
Q
What are transgenetics
A
The incorporation of foreign genes into an organism’s DNA
2
Q
What is the definition of a transgenic animal
A
An animal which has had its DNA altered by the addition of a gene not normally found in that species
3
Q
What is gene pharming
A
A mix of transgenic techniques and farming. It is used to develop animals that produce proteins of medicinal or commercial value
4
Q
List some examples of transgenic animals:
A
• Sheep- milk contains a human blood clotting factor
• Goats- milk contains treatment for cystic fibrosis
• Cattle- lack the protein responsible for BSE
• Pigs- lack the genes that lead to their organs being rejected during transplantation
