Reproductive System Flashcards
Testes
make sperm via meiosis. The testes also produce testosterone, the male hormone.
Vas Deferens
sperm travel through this tube, joins with urethra
Prostate
Gland that produces a fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra
Penis
the male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation.
Epididymis
collects mature sperm which is eventually propelled through the vas deferens
Vasectomy
the tube is cut to prevent sperm leaving (and fertilizing an egg)
Circumcision
the foreskin is surgically removed, exposing the end of the penis.
Ovary
This is where the eggs are produced through cell division (MEIOSIS)
Uterus
The uterus consists of a body and a cervix.
Fallopian Tubes
One of the two Fallopian tubes that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus
Vagina
the muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women and most female mammals.
Cervix
The cervix protrudes into the vagina.
Fraternal Twins
develop from the fertilization of two individual eggs.
Zygote
A fertilized egg is called a zygote
Testosterone
a steroid hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the testes, but also in the ovaries and adrenal cortex.
Mensuration
The menstrual cycle is the monthly hormonal cycle a female’s body goes through to prepare for pregnancy.
Barrier Method
a method of contraception using a device or preparation which prevents live sperm from reaching an ovum.
Ultrasound
sound waves produce an image of the baby
Amniocenteses
Tests fetal cells for abnormalities, such as chromosome numbers
Pap test
a test carried out on a sample of cells from the cervix to check for abnormalities that may be indicative of cervical cancer; a Pap smear.
Epidural
on or around the dura mater, in particular (of an anesthetic) introduced into the space around the dura mater of the spinal cord.
Trimester
a period of three months, especially as a division of the duration of pregnancy.
Umbilical cord
a flexible cordlike structure containing blood vessels and attaching a human or other mammalian fetus to the placenta during gestation.
IUD
intrauterine death (of the fetus before birth).
Ovulation
discharge of ova or ovules from the ovary.
Caesarean section
baby is surgically removed from the mother
fertilization
the action or process of fertilizing an egg, female animal, or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
Plan B
an alternative strategy.
contractions
occur and become faster and faster, this timing can be used to predict the progression of the labor.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a sheet of internal skeletal muscle that extends across the bottom of the thoracic cavity.
Placenta
Attaches to the fetus via the umbilical cord, supplies nutrients to the fetus during pregnancy. It is expelled after the baby is born.
