Reproductive system 1 females Flashcards
What are the main functions of the female reproductive system?
Formation of ova
Reception of spermatozoa
Provision of suitable environments for fertilization and fetal development
Parturition (childbirth)
Lactation (production of breast milk)
What are the components of the external genitalia (vulva)?
Mons pubis
Labia majora
Labia minora
Clitoris
Vaginal orifice
Vestibule
Hymen
Vestibular glands (Bartholin’s glands)
How are the female reproductive organs divided?
External genitalia (vulva)
Internal genitalia
What are the labia majora?
The labia majora are two longitudinal folds of skin extending downwards from the mons pubis, forming the lateral boundaries of the vulva, and containing sebaceous glands on their inner surfaces.
What is the mons pubis?
The mons pubis is a rounded eminence in front of the pubic symphysis, covered with hair at puberty, and formed by a collection of adipose tissue beneath the skin.
What are the labia minora?
The labia minora are two smaller longitudinal folds of skin extending downwards and backwards on either side of the vagina, containing sebaceous and eccrine sweat glands, and enclosing the clitoris.
What is the hymen?
The hymen is a thin fold of mucous membrane that partially seals the orifice of the vagina in the virgin state.
What is the perineum?
roughly triangular area extending from the base of the labia minora to the anal canal,
consisting of connective tissue, muscle, and fat, and giving attachment to the muscles of the pelvic floor.
What are the greater vestibular glands?
The greater vestibular glands are two oval-shaped glands on either side of the vagina that secrete mucus to lubricate the vagina.
What is the blood supply and lymphatic drainage of the vulva?
The vulva is supplied with arterial blood by branches of the internal iliac and femoral arteries,
the lymphatic vessels drain into the superficial lymph nodes.
What are the internal organs of the female reproductive system? A: The internal organs include:
Vagina
Uterus
2 uterine tubes
2 ovaries
What is the structure and function of the vagina?
The vagina is a fibromuscular canal about 10 cm long, extending from the vulva to the uterus, running upwards and backwards behind the urinary bladder and urethra, and in front of the rectum and anal canal.
It acts as the receptacle for the penis during sexual intercourse, the outlet for menstrual flow, and provides an elastic passageway for childbirth.
What are the three coats of the vagina?
Inner coat of mucous membrane (stratified squamous epithelium with rugae)
Middle coat of smooth muscle fibers
Outer coat of loose areolar tissue (contains vessels and nerves, anchors the vagina to adjacent organs)
What is the arterial blood supply to the vagina?
The arterial blood supply to the vagina is by branches of the internal iliac arteries.
Where do the veins of the vagina drain?
The veins of the vagina drain into the internal iliac veins.
