nervous system 1 Flashcards
define irritability
The ability to respond to the environment
The function of the nervous system
- Sensory Function
- Integrative function
- Motor function
Sensory function
Sensory receptors detect internal stimuli,
such as an increase in blood pressure, and external stimuli, such as a raindrop landing on your arm(Afferent neurons)
Integrative function
The nervous system processes sensory information by analysing and storing some of it and by making decisions for appropriate responses—an activity known as integration
Motor function
Motor neurons carry signals from the CNS to the toward our muscles.
Divisions of the Nervous System
- The CNS
- The PNS
The Central Nervous System
- Consists of the brain and spinal cord
The Peripheral Nervous system
- Consists of all the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
Functional parts of the PNS
- Sensory division
- Motor division
Divisions of the motor division of the PNS
- Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
The central nervous system is responsible for what
- Thoughts, Emotions, and memories
Somatic nervous system
- Controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles.
The autonomic nervous system
- Involuntary processes such as heart beat, peristalsis,
divisions of the autonomic nervous system
- Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
