What are the glands of the endocrine system commonly called and why?
They are called ductless glands because they don’t possess ducts and pass their secretions directly into the bloodstream.
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers produced in one organ or gland, passed into the bloodstream, and carried to other organs or tissues where they exert their effect.
List the glands of the endocrine system
1 pituitary gland
1 thyroid gland
4 parathyroid glands
Pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans) in the pancreas
2 adrenal (suprarenal) glands
2 testes in males
2 ovaries in females
1 pineal gland
1 thymus gland
What are the functions of hormones?
Regulate the chemical composition and volume of the internal environment.
Help regulate metabolism and energy balance.
Regulate the contraction of smooth and cardiac muscle fibers and secretions by various glands.
Maintain homeostasis.
Regulate certain activities in the immune system.
Play a role in reproduction, including gamete formation, fertilization, and nourishment of the embryo and fetus.
Contribute to growth and development.
How do hormones affect reproduction?
