Reproductive male Flashcards
Organs of the Male Reproductive System
2 testes
2 epididymis (in the scrotum)
2 seminal ducts
2 seminal vesicles
2 ejaculatory ducts
Prostate gland
Penis
The Scrotum
Pouch of pigmented skin with folds
Contains dartos muscle
Divided into right and left compartments by a muscular septum
The Testes
- Male reproductive glands, equivalent to ovaries in females
- Ellipsoidal organs hanging in the scrotum, suspended by spermatic cords
- Covered by three membranes: tunica vaginalis, tunica albuginea, tunica vesculosa
Tunica Vesculosa
- Inner membrane of the testes
- Thin areolar tissue with a plexus of blood vessels
- Lines the tunica albuginea and fibrous septa
Tunica Vaginalis
- Outer covering of the testes
- Closed sac of serous membrane
- Composed of parietal and visceral layers
The Seminal Duct (Vas Deferens)
- Continuation of the epididymis canal
- Passes upwards in the inguinal canal to enter the pelvis
- Part of the spermatic cord
The Epididymis
- Composed of a tortuous canal (18 feet long)
- Sperm mature and are stored here
- Divided into caput (head), corpus (body), and cauda (tail)
Tunica Albuginea
- Middle membrane of the testes
- Dense, bluish fibrous tissue
- Divides the testis into lobules with incomplete fibrous septa
Blood Supply and Drainage of the Testes
- Arterial supply: Testicular artery from the abdominal aorta
- Venous drainage: Testicular vein (left into left renal vein, right into inferior vena cava)
- Lymph drainage: Lymph nodes around the aorta
- Nerve supply: Branches from the 10th and 11th thoracic nerves
The Seminal Vesicles
- Two sacs, 5 cm in length, on the posterior aspect of the bladder base
- Composed of a single coiled tube with several diverticula
Flashcard 11
The Prostate Gland
- Chestnut-shaped gland at the base of the bladder
- Surrounds the first part of the urethra
- Base faces upwards, apex directed downwards
Purpose of Prostate Gland and Seminal Vesicles
- Seminal vesicles secrete fluid that becomes semen.
- Prostate and seminal vesicles produce secretions that mix with sperm to form semen.
- Semen provides mobility and nutrition to sperm for fertilization
The Male Urethra
Outflow pathway for urine and seminal fluid.
Length: 18-20 cm, from internal urethral orifice to external urethral orifice.
Divided into three parts: prostatic urethra, membranous urethra, spongy urethra.
The Penis
- Composed of a root (in the perineum) and a body (free and covered with skin).
*Contains three columns of erectile tissue: two cavernosa and one spongiosum.
- Corpus spongiosum surrounds the spongy part of the urethra and corresponds to female vestibular bulbs.
- Glans penis is covered by the prepuce (foreskin).
Functions of the Male Reproductive Organs
- Production, maturation, and storage of spermatozoa.
- Delivery of spermatozoa in semen into the female reproductive tract.
- Seminiferous tubules produce spermatozoa, stimulated by follicle-stimulating hormone.
- Spermatozoa become motile in the epididymis and are conveyed to seminal vesicles.
