reproductive strategies in vertebrates Flashcards
What is a reproductive strategy?
Ways animals reproduce to help their young survive.
What is external fertilization?
Fertilization happens outside the female’s body, usually in water.
What is internal fertilization?
Fertilization happens inside the female’s body.
What is ovipary?
Eggs are laid, and the young develop outside the mother’s body.
What is ovovivipary?
Eggs stay inside the mother until they hatch.
What is vivipary?
The baby develops inside the mother and gets food from her.
What is an amniotic egg?
A protective egg with a shell and special membranes for the baby inside.
What are extra-embryonic membranes?
Layers around the baby inside an egg or the mother.
What does the amnion do?
It makes fluid to protect the baby.
What does the allantois do?
It stores waste and helps with breathing.
What does the chorion do?
It helps the baby breathe and forms the placenta in mammals.
What does the yolk sac do?
It provides food for the baby.
What is precocial development?
Babies are born strong and can walk or feed themselves.
What is altricial development?
Babies are weak, need help, and need a lot of care.
What is parental care?
Parents protect, feed, and teach their young.
Why do animals with external fertilization lay many eggs?
Many eggs don’t survive, so more eggs mean better chances
How does the amniotic egg help animals live on land?
It keeps the baby safe, stops drying out, and allows breathing.
