fertilisation & development of zygote to blastocyst Flashcards
Where are sperm cells deposited during ejaculation?
Near the cervix in the vagina.
How do sperm cells reach the fallopian tubes?
They swim through the cervix, into the uterus, and up the fallopian tubes.
What happens when a sperm cell penetrates the ovum?
Fertilisation occurs, forming a diploid zygote.
What type of cell division does the zygote undergo?
Mitosis.
What is the first stage of early embryonic development?
The morula—a solid ball of cells.
What does the morula develop into?
A blastocyst, a hollow, fluid-filled ball of cells.
How long does it take for a fertilised ovum to develop into a blastocyst?
About 5 days.
Where does the blastocyst implant?
Into the uterine lining (endometrium).
What prevents further ovulation after fertilisation?
The corpus luteum continues producing progesterone, inhibiting FSH and LH.
