reproductive physiology - female Flashcards
what are the female reproductive organs
- uterus
- fallopian tube
- ovary
- cervix
- vagina
what are the structure of ovaries?
surface, cortex, medulla
surface: connective tissue capsule with simple cuboidal epithelium
cortex: ovarian follicles
medulla: blood vessels
what is oogenesis
the production of an ovum
describe oogenesis
oogonium undergoes mitosis and arrested in first stage of meiosis
after puberty first meiotic division is complete and second meiotic division starts, a secondary oocyte is released
after fertilisation of the oocyte with sperm, second meiotic division is complete
describe the follicular development stages
primordial follicle - primary oocyte arrested in first stage of meiotic division surrounded by one layer of squamous pre granulosa cells
primary follicle - oocyte surrounded by zone and granulosa cells
secondary follicle - oocyte diameter increases and multiple layers of granulosa cells; resumption of first meiotic division
graffian follicle - follicular fluids between cells coalesce to form antrum; completion of first meiotic division to form secondary oocyte
what is the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis
describe the endocrine control of ovarian cycle
anterior pituitary releases FSH & LH which stimulate the ovaries to produce oestrogen and progesterone
describe the ovarian cycle
describe the menstrual cycle
describe how the ovarian and menstrual cycle interplay
