Reproduction Strategies pt. 2 Flashcards
Anisogamy leads to differences in parental investment.
What are the two ways parental investment can differ?
1) Pre-fertilization
2) Post-fertilization
What is pre-fertilization parental investment?
egg production requires a greater energy investment than sperm production
What is post-fertilization parental investment?
gestation or incubation and defending eggs requires much energy (tasks typically carried out by females)
What are the impacts of anisogamy in elephant seals?
male reproductive success is consistently high
female reproductive success varies
Bateman’s curve
anisogamy causes males and females to differ in the potential rate of reproduction which is demonstrated by Bateman’s curve
Males ARE NOT limited by….
production of small, cheap sperm. males can increase reproductive success by seeking multiple partners (higher fitness)
Females ARE limited by….
production of large, expensive eggs. females cannot increase reproductive success by seeking multiple partners per reproductive cycle
