Reproduction (humans) Flashcards
what is human reproduction?
human reproduction is the biological process where two individuals (male and female) contribute genetic material to produce offspring
what are the two types of reproduction?
Asexual reproduction – Involves one parent; offspring are genetically identical.
Sexual reproduction – Involves two parents; offspring have genetic variation
what is sexual reproduction?
sexual reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes (sperm and egg), resulting in a zygote with genetic material from both parents
where does fertilization occur in humans?
fertilization typically occurs in the fallopian tube
what is fertilization?
fertilization is the fusion of a sperm and an egg to form a zygote
what is a zygote?
a zygote is the first cell formed after fertilization, containing a full set of chromosomes (half from each parent)
what is implantation?
implantation is when the zygote (now a blastocyst) embeds itself into the uterine lining to begin developing into an embryo
what is the difference between an embryo and a fetus?
embryo: From fertilization to 8 weeks of development.
Fetus: From 8 weeks until birth
what is gestation?
gestation is the period of development from fertilization to birth, lasting about 9 months in humans
what triggers labor?
hormonal changes, especially an increase in oxytocin, trigger uterine contractions that lead to childbirth
