what is meant by the endocrine system?
a network of glands and organs in the body that produce and release hormones
what do the hormones do?
- growth and development
- metabolism (how the body uses nrg)
- reproduction
- mood and emotions
- sleep patterns
key parts of the endocrine sys?
- Pituitary gland (Often called the “master gland” because it controls other glands)
- Thyroid gland (Regulates metabolism)
- Adrenal glands (Help control stress responses (produce adrenaline and cortisol)
- Pancreas (Produces insulin to regulate blood sugar)
- Ovaries (in females) and Testes (in males). (Produce sex hormones)
- Pineal gland (Regulates sleep through melatonin production)
what is the main function of the endocrine system?
to produce and release hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, reproduction, and other body functions.
what hormone does the pancreas produce to lower blood sugar levels?
Insulin
what is the function of adrenaline in the body?
prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’ by increasing heart rate and blood flow to muscles.
how does the endocrine system differ from the nervous system in terms of speed and duration?
the endocrine system works slowly but has long-lasting effects, while the nervous system works quickly but effects are short-lived.
which hormones are responsible for regulating the female menstrual cycle?
oestrogen and Progesterone, produced by the ovaries.
