what is fertilisation ?
involves the fusion of a male and female gamete to produce a zygote that undergoes cell division and develops into an embryo
what is the role of oestrogen in the menstrual cycle ?
- produced in the ovaries
- causes the lining of the uterus to grow
- stimulates the release LH
what is the role of progesterone in the menstrual cycle ?
- produced in ovaries by remains of follicle after ovulation
- maintains the singing of the uterus during the second half of the cycle when the level of progesterone falls the lining breaks down
- inhabits the release of LH and FSH
what is the role of the placenta ?
- once embryo has been implanted the placenta develops
- lets blood of the embryo and the mother get very close to allow the exchange of food, oxygen and waste
how is a developing embryo protected ?
- amnion membrane forms
- this surrounds the embryo and is full of amniotic feud
- amniotic fluid protects the embryo against knocks and bumps
