Reproduction 4 Flashcards
what does the hypothalamus release
pituitary to release GnRH to secrete FSH (manage menstrual cycle and help stimulate egg) and LH (manage menstrual cycle and ovulation)
What do the ovaries release?
estrogen to thicken the endometrium and progesterone to maintain the endometrium
what is stage 1 of the menstrual cycle?
flow phase, mark day 1, 4-5 days, shedding endomertrium, low hormones
what is stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
follicular phase day 6-13, repair and thicken the endometrium
FSH promotes follicle development which stimulates estrogen which thickens the endometrium and provides secondary sex characteristics
FSH decrease from estrogen negative feedback
LH increases from GnRH
what is stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
ovulation phase high LH ovulation day 14
secondary oocyte release from follicle/ovary
what is stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
luteal cycle
final prep of endometrium to receive fertilized ovum
LH stim development of corpus lutuem (increase in progesterone levels)
estrogen and progesterone levels inhibit GnRH which decrease LH and FSH which inhibits the flow phase
