Reproduction 1 Flashcards
what is the scrotum?
sac containing testes, regulate testes temp 3 degrees below body temperature by contraction
what is in the testes?
in scrotum, store in abdomen before birth before moving to scrotum
seminiferous tubule: SPERM PRODUCING ORGAN, not mature sperm, nourished by sertoli cells
interstitial cells: source of TESTOSTERONE between tubules
what is spermatogenesis?
production of sperm stimulated by FSH
sperm has little cytoplasm and therefore little E
mitrochondria and flagellum propel the cell, acrosome is the sperm head with digestive enzymes to break down egg coat for penetration
What is ejaculatory duct?
propels sperm and fluids (semen) to urethra
What is the sperm route?
testes (seminiferous tubules)
epididymis (mature)
vas deferens (ductus) (carry sperm from testes to body)
ejaculatory duct (sperm mix w/ ejaculatory fluid (cowper + prostate gland + semininal vessel)
urethra (semen leaves penis)
what is the seminal vesicle?
supportive, secrete semen (fructose to supply E + prostagladins to stimulate uterine peristalsis to move the semen up a woman’s uterus)
what is the prostate gland?
support, donut around ejaculatory duct, milky fluid (sem)
liquify semen (no clump) + alkaline (neutralize acid from urine + vagina)
What is the cowper’s/bulbourethral gland?
supportive, small, secretes viscous fluid before ejaculation of sperm and semen, (pre-ejaculation may contain sperm)
what is the penis?
3 cylinders of spongy tissue, fills with blood when aroused
parasympathetic (erection), erectile/spongiosum tissue fills with blood, compress veins and urethra
sphincter at base of bladder closes
sympathetic (ejaculation), semen enters urethra, pushed by smooth muscle contraction
