Reproduction 3 Flashcards
What are the ovaries?
abdomen, enclosed in a protective capsule
produces immature sex cells (eggs/ova, follicles)
produces female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
contain fibrous connective tissue + group of cells (follicles)
What are the follicles?
immature sex cells, all 400 000 present at birth
one matures and releases its egg per menstrual cycle
made of a primary oocyte (46 chromosomes undergo meiosis to form a mature oocyte or an ovum
made of granulosa cells which provide nutrients for oocyte (immature sex cell)
What is the corpus luteum?
surrounding follicle cells remain in ovary and transform into the corpus leteum
secretes preganancy hormones: estrogen and progesterone
degenerates if pregnancy does not occur
What is the fallopian tube or oviduct?
conducts egg to the uterus
FERTILIZATION OCCURS HERE: ectopic pregnancy if embryo grows here
egg released in the abdominal cavity sucked into the fallopian tube/oviduct
fimbria +cilia move egg to tube and uterus
What is the uterus?
womb, store and nurtures fetus
oviducts enter at top and cervix at bottom
endometrium: lining with blood vessels, thickness changes with mensturation cycle
What are the two layers of the endometrium?
basai (stable, no thickness change with menstruation cycle)
functional (changes with menstrual cycle)
What is the cervix?
musclular band separating the vagina and uterus, holds the fetus in place
What is the vagina?
birth canal, pH 4-5, upper close at cervix, elastic
