Repro pharm Flashcards
Stages of the estrous cycle
Proestrus, estrus, metestrus/diestrus, anestrus
What are the 2 phases of the estrous cycle?
Follicular phase and Luteal phase
What produces Progesterone?
Corpus Luteum and placenta
GnRH analogs
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone
What are Gonadorelins used for?
Stimulation of FSH release and approved for short term use, they are also used to bring cattle into estrus at the same time
Trade names for gonadorelins
Cystolrelin, Factrel, fertagyl, ovacyst
These are less frequently used in vet med and produce their effects on the gonads (ovaries and testes)
Gonadotropins
What can progestins prevent?
An animal from coming into estrus
Used to either regulate the onset of heat for more effective breeding or used to delay the onset of estrus when time is better for the animal
Altrenogest (Regu-mate)
A feed additive, used in cattle, suppresses the estrous cycle or prolongs diestrus
Melengestrol acetate (MGA)
Slender silicon rubber implants, prolongs diestrus in cattle, continuous supply of progesterone for days
Controlled internal drug release (CIDR)
This drug is used in spayed female dogs to treat urinary incontinence
Estradiol tablets and Estriol (Incurin)
Banned in food animals, growth-promoting, or anabolic steroid
Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
What are some side effects of estrogens?
predispose the urethras to infection and pyometra
Suppress blood cell production resulting in an aplastic anemia
Drugs that are recognized by the stem -prost
Prostaglandins
Major role in sychronizing estrous cycles, lyse in the CL, causes progesterone levels to drop
Prostaglandins
Dinoprost tromethamine
Lutalyse, Prostamate, In-Sync
A prostaglandin that is easily absorbed through the skin and can easily produce CL lysis and bronchoconstriction in people
Cloprostenol (Estrumate)
Mibolerone
Androgen hormone, similar to testosterone, interrupts the estrous cycle by inhibiting LH release
Causes CL lysis, results in a decrease in progesterone level and subsequent fatal death
Prostaglandin F2
Prostaglandin F2 approved for termination of pregnancy in mares
Dinoprost tromethamine
Bind with and stimulate dopamine receptors, Prolactin inhibited, has a decline of progesterone necessary for monitoring pregnancy/terminating pregnancy
Dopamine agonists
The corticosteroid that may induce abortion or premature parturition in mares or cattle. it mimics elevated levels of cortisol that happens at the beginning of a normal parturition
Dexmethasone
What is the endogenous hormone released from the pituitary gland that causes contraction of they myometrium.
Oxytocin
What could oxytocin be used for?
Dystocia, increase expulsion of placental materials, decrease uterine hemorrhage, milk let down
