ethnicity
Content analysis into media representation of ethnic groups in the UK over a 10 year period.
Black people are stereotyped in the media in 5 ways
abnormal - negative portrayals of cultural practices, oversimplification in Asian culture
a threat - tabloids present immigrants and asylum seekers as ‘ taking scarce Jobs; and drain on the state
criminal - the word black is normally used in the description of criminals
unimportant - less developed countries were described as a coup- war - famine - syndrome ‘ with little discussion of their exploration by western countries
dependant- priority was given to reporting issues that impact white people
Husband and Hartsman
Ethnicity
sees Black Afro-Caribbean people as “foreigners” and as “inferior”. The Media emphasises racial conflict and problems and presents negative images and stereotypes of ethnic minorities.
Children now - Fair play survey
Ethnicity
stereotyping of ethnic minorities within video games - 86% of heroes were White, 8 out of 10 black characters were portrayed as competitors in sports games and 86% of black female characters were portrayed as victims of violence. It seems from this evidence that the ‘new media’ aimed at the younger generations is more stereotypical than traditional media.
Hall

Ethnicity is viewed ‘through the white eye’.
