Repiratory Muscles Flashcards
What are the two respiratory muscles used when breathing?
The diaphragm and the intercostal muscles.
Where is the diaphragm found?
Below the lungs
Describe the diaphragm’s appearance.
It is cone shaped
What happens during inhalation in relation to the diaphragm?
The diaphragm moves downward and forces air into you lungs and enlarging the thoracic cavity and this decrease pressure hence the air can flow into the lungs.
What is inhalation?
This is an active process where the diaphragm contracts moving downwards allowing air to move into the lungs and where outer intercostal muscles contract lifting the ribs.
Where are the intercostal muscles found?
Between the ribs
What is exhalation?
The process where the diaphragm relaxed moving upwards and forcing air out of the lungs and intercostal muscles relax moving the ribs downwards.
What is the respiratory centre?
The medulla oblongata at the base of the brain that controls the rate and depth of breathing.
