Cardiovascular System Flashcards
How many circuits are there in the cardiovascular system?
2 the Pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit
What are the main components?
The Heart, Blood and blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries)
Where is the heart situated?
Above the diaphragm in the chest cavity behind the breastbone and between the two lungs.
What holds the heart in place?
Large blood vessels
The two upper chambers receive blood from______.
Veins
The two lower chambers are called______.
Ventricles
The two upper chambers are called ________.
Atria(atrium -singular)
True or false
The left ventricle is thinner than the right ventricles since it only pumps blood to the lungs.
False
The left ventricle is thicker than the right ventricle since it pumps blood to the entire body not just the lungs.
What is heartbeat
This is the number of beats per minute
What is the normally rate at which a healthy persons heart beats?
70-75 beats per minute
What type of blood do pulmonary veins carry to the heart
Oxygenated blood that is then pumped out into the rest of the body.
What do arteries do?
Arteries pump oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
What do veins do?
Pump deoxygenated blood towards the heart.
What is special about the pulmonary vein and artery?
Vein usually carry deoxygenated blood to the heart but the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood to the heart. And arteries usually pump oxygenated blood always from the heart but the pulmonary artery pumps deoxygenated blood away from the heart.
What are the capillaries’ functions?
The capillaries join veins and arteries through sites of gaseous exchange.
What is another word for the heart muscle?
Th e cardiac
What is the purpose of the heart
The heart’s purpose is to transport blood with oxygen to the cells of the body and blood low in oxygen to the lungs to receive oxygen.
What is the difference between the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit?
In the pulmonary circuit blood low in oxygen is pumped to the lungs to receive oxygen and give up carbon dioxide, blood high in oxygen returns to the heart. This called lung circulation. Where in the systemic circuit blood rich in oxygen is pumped to the rest of the body where oxygen is given up and carbon dioxide is picked up. This blood goes back to the heart to be pumped back to the lungs.
