What is faith?
Faith is believing and trusting in God. This is evangelical faith.
Heb 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
What is repentance?
Repentance is godly sorrow for sin and turning away from it.
What kind of duties are repentance and faith?
They are sacred duties.
By whom are they wrought?
The sacred duties
They are wrought in the soul by the Holy Spirit.
Does faith save?
No.
Why not?
Does faith save?
It is the medium through which we are saved.
Eph 2:8 “For by grace you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”
Why are repentance and faith necessary?
Because without them salvation is impossible.
Mark 1:15. “and saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
What are the elements of repentance?
Consciousness of sin, sorrow for sin, hatred for and turning away from sin.
What is repentance designed to do?
It is designed to convince the sinner of his guilt, danger and helplessness and point to him the way of salvation.
When the sinner is thus convinced, what does he do?
He trusts in God with unfeigned contrition.
To whom does he return?
The repentant sinner
To God.
Why?
Does the repentant sinner return to God
Because it is his law which the sinner has violated.
Through whom does he plead for mercy?
The repentant sinner
Through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
What does he do in this helpless condition?
He heartily receives the Lord Jesus Christ as his prophet priest and king, And relies on him alone for salvation.
