3 important sero-groups A,B,C - A major human pathogen

Strains based on VP7 (G type) and VP4 (P type) - 10G & 11P are human pathogens

UK circulating strains: G1P8, G2P4, G3P8, G4P8, G9P8

Rota vaccine

A

2 live attenuated vaccines

Rotarix - GSK - used in UK schedule - 85% effective against severe rota infection in < 2 year olds.

RIX4414 strain

ORAL VACCINE

Schedule: 8 weeks and 12 weeks age

SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN IF MORE THAN 24 WEEKS old or if less than 6 weeks.
CI in SCID but can be given in HIV. CI in inherited fructose/glucose malabsorption.

ADR: Intussusception - 2/100,000 first doses

RotaTeq - Sanofi Pasteur

A

Family: Reoviridae

Reovirus particles can contain 9, 10, 11 or 12 segments of linear dsRNA, depending on the genus

Baltimore: III

Orbiviruses- Tick borne Kemerovo virus (Siberia) & Tribec virus (Slovakia). Meningoencephalitis.

Coltivirus: Colorado tick fever. Vector Dermacentor ticks. Western US & Canada. syndrome - IFI & encephalitis.

12 segmented RNA.
