Reoviruses Flashcards
Rotavirus structure & classification
Family: Reoviridae
genus: Rotavirus
11 segmented dsRNA NON ENVELOPED
Baltimore: III
3 important sero-groups A,B,C - A major human pathogen
Strains based on VP7 (G type) and VP4 (P type) - 10G & 11P are human pathogens
UK circulating strains: G1P8, G2P4, G3P8, G4P8, G9P8
Rota incubation & infective period
1-2 days
Infective period: 1-3 weeks
Both similar to Noro
Rota vaccine
2 live attenuated vaccines
Rotarix - GSK - used in UK schedule - 85% effective against severe rota infection in < 2 year olds.
RIX4414 strain
ORAL VACCINE
Schedule: 8 weeks and 12 weeks age
SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN IF MORE THAN 24 WEEKS old or if less than 6 weeks.
CI in SCID but can be given in HIV. CI in inherited fructose/glucose malabsorption.
ADR: Intussusception - 2/100,000 first doses
RotaTeq - Sanofi Pasteur
Orbivirus & Coltivirus
Family: Reoviridae
dsRNA
Reovirus particles can contain 9, 10, 11 or 12 segments of linear dsRNA, depending on the genus
Baltimore: III
Orbiviruses- Tick borne Kemerovo virus (Siberia) & Tribec virus (Slovakia). Meningoencephalitis.
Coltivirus: Colorado tick fever. Vector Dermacentor ticks. Western US & Canada. syndrome - IFI & encephalitis.
12 segmented RNA.
Rota diagnostics & Therapeutics
PCR
antigen - VP6 (conserved)
Rota IgG in chronic infection (SCID)
