Rennstam et al, Chapter 1: Why Analyze? Flashcards
Researchers or students working with qualitative material normally need to address at least three problems. Which are these?
- Problem of chaos (no order in the material)
- Problem of representation (not possible to reproduce all the material in the study, some things need to be emphasized at the expense of other things; the bulk has to be placed inside brackets)
- Problem of authority (the difficulty in asserting ourselves in relation to other researchers and pundits)
How can you address the three problems?
- Sorting
- Reducing
- Arguing
What is methodological frustration?
It refers to the challenges and tensions researchers face in qual when their methodological expectations or plans do not align with the complexities and unpredictability of real-world research processes. This frustration often arises when rigid methodological frameworks clash with the fluid and dynamic nature of fieldwork or data collection.
What is conceptual inversion?
When new forms of organizations exist and they are portrayed as being the opposite of the old ones.
What characterizes research questions?
Research questions are formulated in relation to existing literature in the area
