What does the renal system consist of?
Kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
What are the main functions of the renal system?
Eliminate waste.
Balance potassium, sodium and water.
Regulate blood pressure.
Production of erythropoietin, regulating red blood cell production in bone marrow.
Regulate acid-base balance and conserve fluids.
What are the functions of the kidneys?
Remove waste.
Balance fluids.
Release hormones to regulate blood pressure.
Control production of red blood cells.
What do the ureters do?
Carry urine from kidneys to bladder.
What does the bladder do?
Store urine.
Bladder nerves alert when time to urinate.
What would be prescribed for fluid retention (oedema) in the lungs?
Loop diuretics like furosemide, bumetanide and torasemide.
What can be prescribed in low doses for management of hypertension?
Thiazide diuretics like bendroflumethiazide, hydrochlorothiazide and indapamide.
