What is hypertension?
When the pressure in blood vessels is higher than average.
What is stage 1 hypertension?
140/90 to 159/99
What is stage 2 hypertension?
160/100 to 180/120
What is stage 3 hypertension?
180/120 or more
What increases the risk of hypertension?
Being 50+, alcohol, smoking, sodium, gender, family history, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress.
What is the RAAS?
The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System which is a hormone system regulating blood pressure and fluid electrolyte imbalance, as well as systemic vascular resistance.
What are some hypertension medications?
ACE inhibitors like Enalapril, Lisinopril, Ramipril.
Angiotensin-2 receptor blockers like Candesartan, Irbesartan, Losartan, Valsartan, Olmesartan.
Calcium channel blockers like Amlodipine, Felodipine and Nifedipine.
Diuretics like indapamide and bendroflumethiazide
Beta blockers like atenolol and bisoprolol
Alpha blockers like doxazosin
