Removal of the Brain Flashcards
What are the 2 anatomical divisions of the brain?
CNS & PNS
What are the 2 functional divisions of the brain?
Somatic & Autonomic
What is the CNS made up of?
Brain & Spinal cord
What is the PNS made up of?
12 pairs of Cranial Nerves, 31 pairs of spinal nerves & 2 Sympathetic trunks
What is the role of the Somatic Nervous System?
Control voluntary activities
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
Control involuntary activities
Name the 12 cranial nerves in order
Olfactory nerve Optic nerve Oculomotor nerve Trochlear nerve Trigeminal nerve Abducens nerve Facial nerve Vestibulocochlear nerve Glossopharyngeal nerve Vagus nerve Accessory nerve Hypoglossal nerve
What is the brain stem made up of?
Mid-Brain, Pons & Medulla Oblongata
Why is the accessory nerve different to every other cranial nerve?
Accessory nerve has 2 parts, every other cranial nerve has 1 part. Accessory has cranial part which arises from brain stem and spinal part arising from spinal cord. It enters the foramen magnum.
Where does the oculomotor nerve emerge (attach) from?
Anterior surface of midbrain (in the interpeduncular fossa).
Where does the trochlear nerve leave (attach) from?
Only nerve that leave the posterior surface of brainstem then passes forward and emerges from midbrain
Where does the trigeminal nerve leave (attach) from?
Leaves anterior aspect of lateral side of pons as a small motor root and a large sensory root
Where do the Abducent, facial and vestibulocochlear nerves emerge (attach) from?
In the groove between the lower border of pons and the medulla oblongata
Where do the Glossopharyngeal, vagus and cranial part of accessory nerves leave (attach) from?
Anterolateral surface of medulla in a groove between the olive and the inferior cerebellar peduncle
Where does the spinal part of the accessory nerve emerge (attach) from?
The spinal cord and enter the skull through the foramen magnum
Where do the hypoglossal nerve fibres emerge (attach) from?
Anterior surface of medulla oblongata between pyramid and olive
Where is the attachment of the 5th Cranial nerve?
Lateral side of Pons
