Meninges and Venous Drainage Flashcards
Name 2 types of dura mater
Cranial & Spinal
Describe cranial dura mater
Double- periosteal & meningeal (dura mater proper)
Describe spinal dura mater
Single- meningeal
Describe the arachnoid mater
Transparent
Subarachnoidal space
Describe the Pia Mater
Follows contours & highly vascular
Name the 3 layers of the meninges
Dura Mater
Pia Mater
Arachnoid Mater
List the folds (partitions) of the dura
Falx cerebri
Falx cerebelli
Tentorium cerebelli
Diaphragma sellae
List the vertical folds of the dura
Falx cerebri
Falx cerebelli
List the horizontal folds of the dura
Tentorium cerebelli
Diaphragma sellae
What is the role of the dura partitions?
To restrict rotary displacement of the brain
Describe the anterior attachment of the Falx Cerebri
Attached to the frontal crest & superior sagittal sulcus
Describe the posterior attachment of the Falx Cerebri
Attached to the internal occipital protuberance
What shape is the Falx Cerebri?
Sickle Shaped
What is the posterior part of the Falx Cerebri attached to and what does it lie between?
Attached to the horizontal tentorium cerebelli. It lies between the two cerebral hemispheres
Where is the superior sagittal sinus located?
Upper margin/border of the falx cerebri
Describe blood flow in the superior sagittal sinus
Flow towards the confluence of sinuses and then into the right transverse sinus
Where is the inferior sagittal sinus located?
Within the lower margin/border of the falx cerebri
Describe blood flow in the inferior sagittal sinus
Flow into the straight sinus, into the confluence of sinuses and then into the left transverse sinus
Where does blood from the right & left transverse sinuses enter?
Right and the left sigmoid sinuses
What is the jugular vein composed of? Where is it located?
- Right & Left Sigmoid sinuses
- Jugular Foramen
What does the Tentorium cerebelli separate?
Cerebral hemispheres above from cerebellum below
Describe the posterior attachment of the Tentorium cerebelli
Attached to the Internal occipital protuberance , the margins of transverse sulcus, margins of superior petrosal sulcus and ends at posterior clinoid process
Describe the anterior attachment of the Tentorium cerebelli
Free edge is attached to anterior clinoid process
What is the pituitary gland covered by?
Diaphragm sellae
Where is the Pituary Gland diaphragm sellae located?
Between the anterior and the posterior clinoid processes of sella turcica & roofs the pituitary fossa
Where does the cavernous sinus lie?
On the side of the sella turcica
Describe the blood supply of the cavernous sinus
Receives blood from the superior and inferior opthalmic veins of the orbit, cerebral veins draining the brain and the sphenoparietal sinus which runs under the lesser wing of sphenoid
Describe how the cavernous sinus is drained
Drained by the superior and inferior petrosal sinuses
What vertebrae has no body?
C1
Why does C1 vertebrae have no body?
During embryological life the body detatches from Atlas and joins to Axis
