Q

How significant was the role of the Duke of Norfolk in supressing the Pilgrimage of Grace?

A

duke of Norfolk
- presented the King’s offer of a general pardon. This led to a temporary cessation of hostilities.

–Norfolk commanded the royal forces sent to suppress the rebellion. Despite being outnumbered (the royal army was around 8,000 men against 30,000 rebels)

rebels mistakes
-obert Aske, a lawyer and one of the principal leaders, sought a peaceful resolution and trusted Norfolk’s promises

-fialure of bigots rising

strength of henry
-The King’s October 1536 letter to Norfolk emphasized his disdain for the rebels and instructed him to promise nothing substantial. The general pardon Norfolk offered was a delaying tactic ordered by the King.

-When a second uprising occurred in January 1537, Henry ordered Norfolk to deal with the rebels harshly. Executions followed, including the hanging of Robert Aske and other leaders.
