Function the church, churchmen and clergy
- The church controlled the thoughts, actions and behaviour of the people: this reinforced authority and alliegance.
- All people belonged to the Catholic Church under the spiritual leadership of the Pope.
- Church -> Archbishops -> Bishops -> Clergymen
- Most influential churchmen during HVII’s reign was Richard Fox and John Morton.
Religious, community, beliefs and services
- Lives of the people were governed by religious festivals and rituals of baptism.
- The threat of hell and purgatory acted as a major influence on behaviour
- The Church offered ways a person could acquire grace and lesson their time ion purgatory.

Church’s social role
-People would donate towards rebuilding parish church buildings
-Pay for church objects
-Leave money in their wills; leave money for chantries
-Join/gather in a confraternity.
Religious Orders
Monastic orders- 1% of the male adult population were monks, 900 monasteries. The Benedictine and Cistercians.
Friars- 3 main orders: Dominicans, Franciscans and Augustinians; they worked among lay people, often recruited from lower down the social scale.
Nunneries- run only by women, were less prestige compared to other monasteries + were often poor.
Lollards, Heresy + Anticlericalism
Lollards- they emphasised the understanding of the Bible and encouraged the translation of it into English; saw the Catholic Church as corrupt and were sceptical of transubstantiation and principles of Eucharist; denied the special status of priesthood
Heresy- denial of the validity of the key doctrines of the church.
Aniticlericalism- opposition to the churhc’s role in political and other non-religious matters.
Why was there a decrease in Lollards ?
After the failed Lollards uprising in 1514, the population of Lollards began to decrease.
