What was humanism?
-Developed during the renaissance
-Concerned with the re-establishing the reliability of Latin + Greek translations by going back to original texts.
-Was an intellectual movement, impacted only a minority of the educated nobility + gentry —> limited impression
What were humanists?
People who wanted to improve the quality of teaching + learning in the church: aimed to reform teaching of the church by ending the church’s monopoly of schools + curriculum.
Erasmus (c.1469-1536)
-Was the leading renaissance writer who anticipated Europe would enjoy the golden age of Christianity unity + peace after the essential church reform.
-Wanted to improve Roman Catholic Church.
-Critical of the abuses of the church.
John Colet 1467-1519
-Lectured the new testament at oxford uni + translated it into english
-Rejected Roman Catholic theory- scriptures were ‘mystical’, made his plain and easy to understand
-Wrote first Greek grammar book to be printed in England
1504- became dean of st pauls cathedral
-Founded st paul school
Thomas More (1478-1535)
-English lawyer, scholar, mp, lord chancellor
-Executed for refusing to acknowledge the break from rome in 1530s
-1504- entered parliament
Learning
-Printing press brought to england 1476 by William Caxton -> more texts were available + more ideas to be widely circulated.
-1509- the work of humanists became fashionable
Drama
-Most popular art form at the time, was popular at church-ale festivals
-Mystery plays were most important, performed in towns and cities e,g York, Lincoln etc. They set out moral and religious messages for the moral improvement of their audiences.
Music
-Music ranged from local wind groups that entertained crowds on saints days
Architecture
-Massive amount of rebuilding+ building of parish churches were common.
-Were built in the gothic perpendicular style
