A movement led by the 14th century English religious reformer John Wyclif, advocating that the Church should help people live a life of evangelical poverty and imitate Christ.
Simony
The act of selling Church offices and roles or sacred things.
Pluralism
The practice of holding more than one ecclesiastical office at a time.
Absenteeism
Regularly staying away from somewhere without good reason.
Nepotism
The practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.
Anti-clericalism
Opposition to the Church’s role in political and other non-religious matters.
John Colet (1467-1519)
Travelled to Italy and was introduced to humanist influences there. Refounded St. Paul’s school in 1512. His one surviving sermon was highly critical of the standards of the clergy.
William Grocyn (1449-1519)
Began to lecture at Oxford on the ideas of Plato and Aristotle.
Thomas Linacre (1460-1524)
Influenced by the scientific thinking he acquired in Italy, and took a medical degree at the University of Padua.
Thomas More (1478-1535)
Distinguished lawyer and humanist scholar. Author of utopia. A valued councilor of Henry VIII he was appointed lord chancellor in 1529. Resigned in 1532 after the dissolution of the monasteries and was executed.
