The rebels demanded for the reduction of taxes, the re-establishment of the Catholic Church and the replacement of Henry’s main advisors.

The Lincolnshire rebellion collapsed when faced with the forces of the Duke of Suffolk, yet northern rebels occupied York, Hull and Pontefract castle, This alarmed the crown.
Henry sent an army North and they were outnumbered. The rebellion was diffused through promises of a pardon, dissolved monasteries restored and a free parliament established. The King did not intend to honour these promises.
In conclusion, Henry’s reaction was: poorly organised, dishonest and ruthless.

What happened to the Duke of Buckingham?
The Duke of Buckingham was an English nobleman and first cousin of Henry VIII. He was executed on the 17th of May 1521 for treason. Accused of listening to prophecies of the King’s death and intending to kill the King. The Duke had been saying he had a better claim to the throne because he would be able to produce a male heir.
What was the ‘Vagabonds Act’?
Cromwell created the ‘Vagabonds Act’ in 1531. It distributed resources to the London poor and it was believed that 200 people were coming for aid every day.

The amount of JPs increased.
Nobility increased in size, there were 9 more peers.More nobles were executed.

How did society stay the same under the reign of Henry VIII?
The structure of society didn’t change.
Local landowners were still relied on to carry out the role of the sheriff and JPs.
Living standards for commoners did not change for the first half of Henry’s reign.
Legislations against enclosure were passed in 1489, 1515 and 534.
