Who was John Cabot?
Cabot appears to have arrived in Bristol in 1494 or 1495. this was a time when Bristol Fish merchants were looking for alternative fishing grounds to exploit, having been excluded from Icelandic waters by the Hanseatic League.
Cabot received authorization from Henry VII to ‘search out and isles, countries, regions or provinces of heathens and infidels part of the world so ever which have been before these times unknown to all Christians.’
He set sail in 1497 and located what became known as Newfoundland and reported the existence of extensive fishing grounds.
When he set off on another voyage in 1498 he never returned. He was presumed lost at sea.
1506 Intercursus Malus
Gave England an advantage. Ended a third trade embargo with Burgundy, made formal arrangements for a dowry of Margaret of Savoy who Henry wanted to marry. Agreed not to harbor rebels.
1496 Intercursus Magnus
Ended the trade embargoes between Burgundy and England.
1493 Trading embargo with the Netherlands
When Henry put a trade embargo in Burgundy, Burgundy responded by putting an embargo on all English goods. Riots in London took place on the 15th of October 1493 because the men involved were mainly unemployed because of the embargo.
1492 Treaty of Etaples
Signed between Charles VIII of France and Henry VII of England. the treaty ended an English invasion of France launched in order to stop France’s support for the pretender Perkin Warbeck. France had to pay England £5000 a year.
1489 Navigation Act
Only English ships were allowed to be used to import goods and that a foreign ship could only be used if an English ship was not available.
1485 Navigation Act
This act forbade English merchants from loading their goods onto foreign ships if English ships were available.
Open field husbandry
The form of landholding which predominated in most of ‘lowland’ England. The manor was a specific landed estate whose tenants farmed strips of land in open fields and who enjoyed common rights, particularly the right for keeping animals. This system came under increasing pressure by enclosure in some parts of the country as the 16th century unfolded.

Grain farming and fruit growing.
Pastoral farming
Involves the rearing of animals.
Mixed farming
Growing crops and raising livestock. Mixed farming was the most common form of farming in the lowland zone, though pastoral farming predominated in woodland areas.

Evidence of a greater move towards sheep farming in the 1480s and 1490s, and the population began to increase again after black death.
