How did the councilor approach to government end?
The councillor approach to government lasted from 1509 to 1514.
Henry became disenchanted with the reluctance of some of his father’s senior councillors to support a war with France. As he became more attuned to governing, he increasingly asserted his right to control decision-making. Henry surrounded himself with like-minded courtiers who reinforced his suspicions of the ‘old guard’. Henry became impressed with the organisational abilities of Thomas Wolsey, and Wolsey emerged as the dominant political figure.
What were the Eltham Ordinances?
Cut the members of the privy council from twelve to six, those removed were Wolsey’s enemies.
How did Wolsey gain influence in the privy council?
Eltham ordinances, less members. Replaced the groom of the stool with the more compliant Henry Norris.
How did Wolsey show he was a skilled organiser?
Helped Henry at the Battle of Spurs in 1513 and proved himself to be a skilled organiser.
Also helped to organise the Field of the Cloth of Gold in June 1520, which created a peace treaty with France, however the treaty did not last for even five years and the event cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.
What was the amicable grant?
It was unpopular unparliamentary taxation introduced by Wolsey in 1525, it nearly caused a rebellion.
First and Second Suppression Acts
1534, first act, small monasteries with an income of less than £200 a year were closed. 1536, second act, allowed the dissolution of the larger monasteries.
Act in Restraint of Annates
November 1534, the annates paid by a bishop, which had been intolerable when paid to the pope, now became acceptable when paid to the king.
Treason Act
November 1534, treason could be committed by the spoken word as well as by deed or writing.
Act of Supremacy
November 1534, stated that “the king’s majesty justly and rightfully is and oweth to be the supreme head of the Church of England.”
Act of Succession
April 1534, Henry’s marriage to Catherine was void. To deny the validity of Henry’s marriage to Anne was treason.
Act in Restraint of Appeals
April 1533, declared that the monarch possessed an imperial jurisdiction which was not subject to any foreign power. This meant that Catherine of Aragon could not appeal to Rome against her marriage annulment.
