Why was there tension over religion between England and Ireland?
Britain is 90% Anglican
Ireland is 80 - 90% Catholic
The Anglicans and Catholics didn’t like each other
What did Methodists believe?
They encouraged people to be responsible, listen to the government, work hard and be good in society
How many Methodists were there in 1812?
It had around 350,000 followers in 1812 but the actual figure is around half of that
What did the government think of the Methodists?
The government saw them as trouble because they thought people were equal in the eyes of God
What did the government do about the Methodists?
The Bill requiring Dissenting was made so that only respectable preachers could be liscensed in 1811.

Wha was the Toleration Act?
Give Methodists legal protective rights so it proved they weren’t thought of as a menace to society
What did Methodists do with workers?
They positively tackled the industrial workers discontent
What was the purpose of Sunday schools?
They were the main place for the poor to get educated and children were taught to follow the government, not be idle or wicked
How many new Sunday schools were made by 1800 - 1821?
1801 - 2,000
1821 - 8,000

Why did some people not want the poor to read and write?
So they can’t go against the government or revel
What did Evangelicals want to promote with books?
They wanted to promote good manners through books, such as Hanne Moore.
What societies did the evangelicals make?
There were Societies to benefit society made like the Reformation of Manners and the Society for Orphans
