Reliability and validity Flashcards
Internal validity
is it a true or accurate measure of what it has set out to measure?
face validity
does it appear to measure what it sets out to?
construct validity
does the study measure the full range of components that make up a behavior?
criterion validity
does the measurement of a variable in one way relate to its measurement in another way?
concurrent validity
does a new measurement or test measure the same thing as an old one that has already been validated - do the results concur?
predictive validity
does the measurement of a behavior predict performance on another related measurement?
Internal reliability
refers to how consistent the procedure or research is
are all participants experiencing the same thing?
how do we assess for internal reliability
split half method
spilt the test in half
compare performance on one half of the test with performance on other half
a strong positive correlation indicates reliability
external reliability
refers to if the procedure has been repeated and are the results consistent?
if test is repeated and gets the same results then its reliable
how do we assess for external reliability
test re-test method
complete the test on more that one occasion
compare the performance on the tests
a strong positive correlation indicates reliability
