Correlations Flashcards
correlations
look for a relationship between two variables not meaning that one causes the other
positive correlation
as one variable increases so does the other variable or as one decreases so does the other
negative correlation
as one variable increases another decreases
no correlation
variables are said to be uncorrelated
correlation coefficient
tells us the strength of a relationship between two variables and refers to a number between -1 and +1 and tells us the direction of the correlation
perfect negative correlation
-1.0
perfect positive correlation
+1.0
strong negative
-0.8
strong positive
+0.8
weak negative
-0.2
weak positive
+0.2
no correlation coefficient
0
strength of correlations
identify relationships between variables without manipulating behavior so it can be used in situations where experiments would be impossible or un ethical
weakness of correlations
cause and effect can’t be established, correlations only show a relationship between variables so we need further research to establish a C&E
steps for calculating Spearman’s Rho
- rank the data from lowest to highest (each variable separate)
- calculate difference between ranks
- square the difference between ranks
- sum the squared differences
