Peer review Flashcards
psychology journal
collection of recent psychological studies
journals tend to be published ______
quarterly (every 4 years)
peer review
process by which psychological research papers before publication in a journal are objected to independent scrutiny by other psychologists working in a similar field who consider the research in terms of its validity, significance and originality
purpose of peer review
ensure that only high quality psychological research is published and is in the public domain
how peer review is used to validate new knowledge
psychologists who want to publish research send their report manuscript to a journal
editor of journal examines the topic of the manuscript and sends copies to other psychologists who are experts in that topic - these experts are the peer reviewers
peer reviewers read the manuscript carefully and assess all aspects of it
they then send it back to the editor with comments and a recommendation about its suitability for publication
using these reports editor must decide whether research is published or should be revised or rejected
problems with peer review
peer review is subject to bias like if the reviewer’s theoretical view is different from that in the manuscript
