studies supporting ducks?
tashiro et al
boekhout et al
what did tashiro et al say?
study involving students.after breakup reported not only feeling distress but personal growth &better insight in selves and what they wanted in future r. through grave and ressurection process they could move on showin d’s credibility
limitation of tashiro study?
sample biased(students) and could be diff to adults & wider pop lacking external validitiy
what does models have?
face validity as process of both many can relate too
what did boekhout et al say?
support for ducks and how lack of skills/stimulation can lead to breakdown. studying extramarital affairs was a direct reaction to perceived lack of skills etc w men citing lack of sexual excitement/boredom & women lack of attention/emotional sat
critiscm of boekhout et al?
such reasons given may not be genuine and on account to portray those committing affair as victim
other studies with d & l?
kaissin et al
argyle et al
akert et al
what did kassin et al say? (both th)
gender diff apparent in d & l - found women stress unhappiness & incompatibility while men lack of sex. women want to be friends men want clear breakup
what did argyle et al say?(both th)
support gender diff with women lack of emotional support men = lack of fun
what are the negatives of the models? (both th)
lack gender diff sugessting theories reductionist and oversimplified
what did akert et al say? (both th)
found individ diff w person who insitgated the breakup suffering less consequences than non instigator. neither models can explain this. could be those instigating came to terms with r.
what happened in lees research?
created theory based on researc and surveys of 112 breakups of non martial romantic relationships and found negotiation and exposure stages most distressing. ind who skipped stages= less intimate r’s shows that lees model applies to longer closer r’s than casual ones
critiscm of lees research?
based on non marital r & this may not apply to married coupled involving children and other shared assets
what do both models provide?
practical implications for counselling assessing which stage a couple is in can help devise ways to resolve & save r w/intervention showing theories provide benefits
negatives of models? (3)
- phases of breakdown not always universal and not all go through same order and some walk away
- dont help to understand why breakup occur
- may not apply to homo limiting external valid
negatives of models part 2?
both suffer cultural bias as western culture. some culture arranged= more permanent which model cant explain. therefore models can be aruged- ethnocentric and lacking external valid to wider gen of cultures
negatives of model part 3?
neither factor love yet universally accepted. e.g abusive r where abused may not intiate stages and just walk away
negatives of model part 4?
ethical issues and concern carrying research =sensitve role. raises vunerability of p discussing breakups =distress and privacy also concern as it is of personal nature.
