Obesity
Mainly caused by eating more food than the body requires, so that excess energy is stored as far
- causes heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes etc
Cardiovascular disease
Blood flow to the heart, brain or body is reduced because of a blood clot narrowing the arteries
CHD
Mainly caused by a diet high in saturated fats which creates a lot of cholesterol
-> this builds up in the lining of arteries which blocks them and can cause a heart attack
How to reduce high blood pressure
- eat your 5 a day
- eat a varied diet
- reduce your fat intake
- eat more starchy carbs
- eat mono and polyunsaturated fats
- reduce your salt intake
- eat at least 2 portions of fish a week
Diabetes
- when glucose levels are unbalanced
- type 1: caused by pancreas not producing enough insulin
- type 2: poor diet
Diverticulitis
- condition that affects the large intestine -> linked to having a diet low in fibre
- pain and discomfort in abdomen and bloating
Osteoporosis
When bones start to lose minerals and strength to become brittle and break easily
Tooth decay
Caused when the bacteria in your mouth (plaque) feed on the sucrose to produce acid which then causes small holes in your teeth
Anaemia
- caused by a lack of iron
- teenage girls and pregnant women are vulnerable
