Regions Of The Brain Flashcards
What is included in the cerebral cortex?
Broken into 4 hemispheres
Frontal
Parietal
Temporal
Occipital
What are included in the forebrain?
Cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, lymbic system, thalamus and hypothalamus
Executive function, impulse control, long term planning (prefrontal cortex), motor function (primary motor cortex), and speech production (Broca)…
Frontal lobe (Phineas Gage)
What is the basal ganglia responsible for? And what disease is characterized by damage to basal ganglia
Coordinates movements, smoothen movements, postural stability. Damage = Parkinson’s (jerky movements)
What are the functions of the parietal lobe?
Sensation (touch, temp, pain - somatosensory cortex), spatial processing, orientation and manipulation
What areas are included in the temporal hemisphere and what do they do?
Auditory cortex - sound
Wenicke’s - speech perception
Limbic system (memory and emotion)
What are some specific parts of the limbic system?
Amygdala - controls fear and aggression
Septal nuclei - pleasure seeking, addiction
Consolidates memories and communicate with the limbic system (part of the forebrain)
Hippocampus
