What is kinship and who is included?
Kin do not have to live together. Kin are considered a cultural group rather than biological one.
Types of kin
- consanguineal (biological)
- Affinal (marriage)
- Fictive - social ties that are not biological or affinal (adopted children)
Degrees of kinship
- first degree; first degree family members (mother)
- second degree (mothers brother; uncle)
- third degree: secondary kin of first degree family members (mothers uncle)
What is an egalitarian family?
Where spouses are treated as equals
Hidden curriculum?
Often conflict with the manifest curriculum
What is educational segregation?
Level of education opportunities is proportional to family income class, this leads to widening disparity between children from different income neighborhoods.
What is ecclesia? (Religion)
A dominant religious organization that includes most members of society. Recognized as the national or official religion.it is often integrated into political institutions. Example: Islam, is the official religion of Iran.
What is a sect?
A religious organization that is distinct from the larger society.
What is Secularization?
Secularization is the process through which religion loses its social significance in modern societies.
What is fundamentalism? (Fundamentalists)
Response to modern society where there is a strong attachment to traditional religious beliefs and practices, with a strict adherence to religious doctrines (from literal interpretations to text)
Religiosity?
Extent of religion in a person’s life
What is rational legal authority and what is an example?
Legal rules and regulations are stipulated in a document (US Constitution)
Traditional authority?
Governments derive power from customs, traditions or accepted practices.
What are aristocracies?
Rule by elite citizens, selected based on specific qualifications. Public is not involved
What is an Autocratic government?
Those ruled by a single person (or small group) with absolute decision making power.
Examples:
Dictatorships
Monarchs
Characteristics of an authoritarian government and examples.
Characteristics - unelected leaders, public may have some freedoms but no control over representations.
Traditional economies
Consider social customs in economic decisions (most common in rural areas or where trading and bartering is common)
