Regions of the Bone Flashcards
What are the different regions of the bone?
Diaphysis
cylindrical shaft of the bone
Epiphysis
ends of the bone; larger to strengthen joints
-increases surface area for articulation and tendon/ligament attachments
Regions within the Epiphysis
Proximal Epiphysis
Distal Epiphysis
Proximal Epiphysis
proximal end of the bone
Distal Epiphysis
distal end of the bone
Metaphysis
is the region between diaphysis and epiphysis
Regions within Metaphysis
Epiphyseal Plate
Epiphyseal Line
Epiphysial Plate vs Epiphyseal Line
Epi plate - made of hyaline cartilage to make the bone longer (growing in height)
Epi line - remnant of epiphyseal plate in adults (once adults; no more hyaline for growth)
What is Articular Cartilage?
Hyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis to reduce friction and absorb shock
What is the Medullar Cavity?
hollow space within diaphysisW
What can be found in the medullary cavity>
RDM in children
YBM in adults
What does the Endosteum cover? what does it contain?
- it covers the internal surface of the bone
- contains osteoprogenitor cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts for bone growth and remodeling
location:
medullary cavity
What does the Periosteum cover, protect, and contain? What are its continents for?
-covers the outer surface of the bone; except those covered by articulate cartilage
-protects bone anchors, blood vessels, and nerves to bone
-contains osteoprogenitor cells and osteoblast; for growth and repair
