What are the structures in the Compact Bone?
Osteon / Haversian system
Central Canal
Concentric Lamella
Osteocytes
Canaliculi
Interstitial Lamella
Osteon / Haversian system
functional/structural unit; runs parallel with the diaphysis
Central Canal
- a space within the osteon
passageway for blood vessels and nerves that supply the bone at the center of the osteon
Concentric Lamella
- circles within circles
rings of osseous tissues around the central canal; each CL has collagen running in opp. direction to help increase the strenght of the bone
Osteocytes
bone cell trapped in lacunae w/ cytoplasmic extensions that travel through
Canaliculi
small channel within lacunae or central canal that allows the osteocytes to communicate w/ each other so nutrients, wastes, gases can travel within/through the central canal and osteocytes
Interstitial Lamella
parts of older osteons that have been resorbed
-triangle shaped in between the concentric lamella
