Bone Growth + Hormones Flashcards
Where does bone growth?
at the epiphyseal plate at the zone of proliferating (mitosis) cartilage and zone of hypertrophic cartilage (growth in size) makes new cartilage and zone of ossification makes new bone
hyaline cartilage is less as we grow older while the amount of bone in the epihyseal plate increases
What does resorbing mean? what does it help with?
removing old osseous tissues; helps maintains calcium and phosphate levels in body
Why does bone remodeling occur?
when there is stress occurring; osteocytes detect and communicate with the osteoblast to make more bone
more stress more bone
How does stress affect our bones?
As we age what occurs more?
resorption increases; over the amount of bones forming
Name two hormones that affect bones
Calcitonin
Parathyroid Hormone
____________ is produced by the ________ gland when _______ in blood is __________.
Calcitonin
Thyroid
calcium
increased
puts calcium in our bone
_______ hormone (PTH) is produced by the ________ gland when ______ calcium levels in blood.
Parathyroid
Parathyroid
decreased
