Functions of Bones Flashcards
What are the functions of the bone?
support
protection
movement
hemopoiesis
Storage for Mineral + Energy
What is stored in the bone?
Calcium
Phosphate
Yellow Bone Marrow
why is calcium stored in the bone?
muscle contraction, blood clotting, and nerve impulse
Why is Phosphate stored in the bone?
ATP - Adenosine triphosphate
Why is Yellow Bone Marrow stored in the bone?
fat storage for energy (through triglycerides)
What is hemopoiesis?
Production of blood cells
What is the difference between red and yellow bone marrow?
RBM - location where blood cells are produced
YMB - adipose connective tissue that fills the rest of the bones and turns RBM into fat
Support of
the framework of the body
Protects the
organ /tissues
Movements of
the attachment sites for skeletal muscles for contraction causing movement
What organ produces blood cells
Red bone marrow
RBM in children is found in
the spongy bone and medullary cavity of bones
RBM in adults are found in
the axial skeleton and proxial epiphyses
