What is region? (two definitions)
An area on the earth’s surface that is defined by certain unifying characteristics
The sense of place that humans possess may apply to a larger area of Earth rather to a specific point
What are the three types of regions?
- Formal region
- Functional region
- Vernacular region
What is formal region?
An area within which everyone shares a common one or more distinctive characteristics
What is a formal region characterized by (two definitions)?
- By common human property. The presence of a people who share a particular language, religion, nationality, political identity or culture .
- A common physical property such as the presence of a particular type of climate, landform, or vegetation.
What is a functional region?
An area organized around a node or focal point with the surrounding areas linked to that node by transportation systems, communication systems, or other economic association (i.e. manufacturing and retail trading).
What is a functional region linked by?
Linked by commuting patterns, trade flows, television and radio broadcasts, newspapers, fire or police service, etc.
What does a functional region?
It requires a form of spatial interaction between nodes and the surrounding region
What does a functional region have?
A defined core that retains specific characteristics that diminishes outwards.
What is another term for vernacular region?
A perceptual region
What is a vernacular region? (two definitions)
1, It is a place that people believe exists as part of the cultural identity.
2. A construct that reflects human feelings and attitudes about areas and is therefore defined by people’s shared subjective images of those areas.

- territory [or we can substituted other words here, boundaries, regions, nations, places].
- land

- social identity (e.g. I’m a Southerner, a Yankee, a Virginian, a Canadian, etc.
In short, lines, boundaries, territories, regions …. They matter. The separation of the earth’s surface into various units (nations, states, districts, regions, places, communities, neighborhoods) are…..
